William Carey University Celebrates Breast Cancer Awareness Month

Hattiesburg, MS, September 18, 2008 - William Carey University will kick off October’s Breast Cancer Awareness Month with a variety of events designed to promote awareness and prevention of the world’s second most common type of cancer.

Events include an official pink ribbon dedication day on Wednesday, Sept. 24, when pink ribbons will be presented to President Tommy King and then given to faculty, staff and students. People will then be encouraged to wear their ribbons throughout the month of October with all donations going to the American Cancer Society.

Other events include a Breast Cancer Awareness focused Beauty Review Friday, Oct. 3 at 7 p.m. in the Smith Auditorium with proceeds going to breast cancer research and a “Tickled Pink” door decorating contest.

“One of the College of Osteopathic Medicine’s goals is education on awareness and prevention of disease,” said Dr. Michael Murphy, founding dean of the WCU-COM. To educate campus residents on the prevention of breast cancer healthcare professionals will conduct question and answer sessions in the resident halls.

The WCU College of Osteopathic Medicine will be sponsoring additional health awareness programs including testicular cancer, high blood pressure, and diabetes.  WCU-COM plans to start classes for 100 osteopathic medical students in 2010.

The American Cancer Society and the Mississippi Area Health Education Center will supply brochures and other educational materials for students, faculty and staff.
