William Carey University to Offer Online School Counseling Program
Hattiesburg, MS, September 24, 2008 - William Carey University will offer an online school counseling endorsement program beginning in the winter trimester, November 10, as a hybrid online program. The program consists of a maximum of 24 semester hours (18 if pre-requisites are already met) of which 18 hours are offered online.
“The program is geared toward individuals who hold a master of education degree and a valid Mississippi ‘AA’ Teacher License,” said Dr. Frank Baugh, dean of the School of Natural and Behavioral Sciences.
Some courses will require additional internship activities which will include approved “hands-on” experiences in a school setting.
“The number one benefit of any online course is convenience,” said Baugh. “Other benefits include cost and time savings because a student’s travel to campus is eliminated or at least greatly reduced. Small group discussions provide students more opportunity to interact, encourage deeper thinking related to the course material, and foster extensive collaboration with other students on various assignments.”
Other advantages include a comfortable atmosphere for students who are less likely to voice their opinions in class. Also, online classes foster ongoing intellectual discussions. “For example, a student may note an important thought or question related to the material while attending a family barbecue,” said Baugh. “After or even during the barbecue the student can steal a few minutes to login online and submit the thought for consideration by the entire learning community or a small discussion group. Access to the learning community and material at any time, day or night, often encourages engagement with the material and integration of the important concepts with the student’s professional and personal life.”
