Hattiesburg, MS, July 1, 2010 - William Carey University chemistry major Michele Leigh Stover of Moselle received a Graduate of Assistance in Areas of National Need (GAANN) Fellowship to the University of Alabama.

This prestigious fellowship, funded by the US Department of Education and the University of Alabama, consists of a 12-month stipend, full tuition, a laptop computer allowance, travel stipend for professional meetings, and medical insurance. Stover will teach a class and work with a faculty advisor to develop course content.

At Carey, she designed a scientific poster that currently hangs in Green Science on the Hattiesburg campus. She also presented her research at the Mississippi Academy of Science and her poster at the National American Chemical Society conference in San Francisco.

Stover, who also has a minor in mathematics, was accepted early into the physical chemistry graduate program. She graduated from Carey in May with a bachelor of science degree in chemistry.
Stover’s employment experience includes working with the USDA laboratory in Stoneville where she studied the energy content of different wheat and rye samples.

“The objective of the GAANN Fellowship is to enhance the diversity, quality and professionalism of the PhD program experience in our department,” said Silas Blackstock, GAANN Program Co-director.
