A possible tornado hit the William Carey University campus in Hattiesburg early Saturday morning.

Emergency personnel are on the scene to ensure students are safe. All dorm rooms and the Tuscan apartments have been searched and cleared. Some minor injuries have been reported.

There is widespread damage on campus including damage to dorms, Tatum Court, Thomas Hall and the library. Cars have been damaged; there are trees down on the roads and structure damage in the neighborhood around campus.

William Carey University inducted 34 new members into the Mississippi Beta chapter of Alpha Chi National College Honor Society on January 11. 
 
Membership into Alpha Chi is limited to no more than 10 percent of the junior, senior, and graduate class members. Carey students must have at least a 3.70 grade point average on the 4.0 scale to qualify for membership.

William Carey University will host a Careers in Health Care symposium on Wednesday, Jan. 18 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. 
 
WCU College of Osteopathic Medicine, WCU School of Nursing, WCU Physical Therapy, WCU Music Therapy, WCU Health Information Management, and Pearl River Community College and Jones County Junior College will present information about health care education and careers. The event will include tours of the WCU medical school, nursing, and physical therapy departments.

William Carey University has been recognized by U.S. News & World Report as a leader in Mississippi and in the United States in providing excellent online graduate education programs.
 
The annual "Best Online Programs" rankings, released Jan. 10, ranked 262 institutions from across the nation. Carey comes in at number 29 for graduate-level education programs and is the highest ranked school in Mississippi; the University of Mississippi ranks number 43, and Mississippi State is number 84.

The Lucile Parker Gallery will host an exhibit of paintings by John Armistead Jan. 10 – Feb. 2. An opening reception will be held on Tuesday, Jan. 10 from 4:30 to 6 p.m. The gallery is located at 512 Tuscan Avenue on the William Carey University campus. William Carey University’s School of Education recently received accreditation for 2017-2023 based on the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE) standards. NCATE’s performance-based accreditation system for teacher preparation ensures that teacher candidates are prepared to make a difference in P-12 student learning.

William Carey University senior Angelo Morales is the 2016 recipient of the Hub Award Leadership Scholarship. He was recognized during the 38th annual Hub Award dinner on Nov. 15 at Lake Terrace Convention Center in Hattiesburg.
 
On receiving this recognition, Morales said, “It was an amazing experience to be recognized by Dr. King and the community this way. I was humbled to receive not only this recognition, but the financial scholarship associated with it.”

Registration is now open for the spring term of the Suzuki Institute at William Carey University. 
 
Openings for young violin, viola and cello students, ages 4-12. All levels are accepted. Lessons and classes start January 9. A 10% discount is available for second child enrolled in the program and for WCU employees' children. The deadline to register is Jan. 6.

William Carey University College of Osteopathic Medicine students demonstrated how telemedical kits delivered by disaster drones could be used to assist victims and rescue personnel during a simulated mass casualty event on Dec. 6 at John Bell Williams Airport in Bolton. The development of the disaster drones is a joint project with the unmanned aerial systems program at Hinds Community College.

Children who grow up overweight or obese risk developing secondary diseases such as hypertension, diabetes, heart/renal disease, and joint dysfunction. The William Carey University Tradition campus has partnered with Coastal Family Health Center and the National Diabetes and Obesity Research Institute to address the risk factors that lead to obesity and to encourage healthy eating and exercise habits for middle school students.
