Hattiesburg, Miss., October 30, 2013 - The Mississippi State Committee of the National Museum of Women in the Arts held a meeting luncheon and toured William Carey University’s art museum on October 15. The purpose of the National Museum of Women in the Arts organization is to bring recognition to the achievements of women artists of all periods and nationalities by exhibiting, preserving, acquiring, and researching art by women and by teaching the public about their accomplishments.

Hattiesburg, Miss., October 30, 2013 - William Carey University’s men’s basketball program is offering a free basketball clinic for boys ages 8-13 on November 2 in Clinton Gymnasium on the Hattiesburg Campus. The men’s basketball team is partnering with the Hattiesburg Police Department and Grace Temple Ministries to conduct the clinic, which will run from 9 a.m. - 12 p.m.

The clinic is part of WCU implementing the NAIA Champions of Character program which promotes the core values of respect, integrity, sportsmanship, servant leadership, and responsibility.

Hattiesburg, Miss., October 25, 2013 - The Greater PineBelt Community Foundation’s Ann Morris Memorial Fund recently awarded $7,000 to the William Carey University Quality of Life Project, which pairs students with adults with intellectual developmental disabilities in activities designed to enrich their lives. The project has been in operation since August 2009.

Hattiesburg, Miss., October 25, 2013 - William Carey University hosted a reception for Miss Mississippi Chelsea Rick on October 18 in the Asbury Administrative Center lobby. Rick recently completed her first year of medical school at the William Carey University College of Osteopathic Medicine (WCUCOM).

Hattiesburg, Miss., October 25, 2013 - William Carey University hosted a reunion for Mississippi Woman’s College, the predecessor to William Carey, on October 18 in the Thomas Business Building on the Hattiesburg campus. The luncheon included an address and special entertainment by Miss Mississippi Chelsea Rick, who recently completed her first year of medical school at the WCU College of Osteopathic Medicine (WCUCOM). Dr. Tommy King, president, gave an update on university happenings, construction, and plans for the future.

Hattiesburg, Miss., October 23, 2013 - Dr. Charlotte McShea, professor of mathematics and chair, department of mathematics at William Carey University, has been named College Mathematics Teacher of the Year by the Mississippi Council of Teachers of Mathematics (MCTM). The purpose of MCTM is to encourage an active interest in mathematics, to afford a medium of interchange of views regarding the teaching of mathematics, and to further the cooperative study of problems relating to the teaching of mathematics at all five levels of instruction.

Hattiesburg, Miss., October 23, 2013 - Dick Vogel, associate vice president for athletic and university advancement, recently served as a presenter at The Business of Small College Athletics workshop at the Oklahoma City Marriott October 14-15. The Business of Small College Athletics workshop is designed specifically for administrators working in small college athletic departments.

Hattiesburg, Miss., October 16, 2013 - Jerry and Kelly Southern, workers in Thailand, spoke to Carey Scholars during their monthly Honors Colloquium at William Carey University on October 11. The couple is currently home on furlough, living in the missionary house at Hickory Grove Baptist Church in Sumrall and working with their home church of Providence Baptist Church in Hattiesburg.

Jerry is originally from Purvis and Kelly is from Mt. Olive Their son Austin is a college freshman and their daughter Adriene attends Sumrall High School.

Hattiesburg, Miss., October 15, 2013 - William Carey University’s Dr. Kelly Caffery, instructor of biology and psychology, will be holding an Enrichment Day at the Hattiesburg Zoo for her animal behavior class on October 19 at 11a.m. They will be making and presenting enrichment items to several different animals at the zoo including the jaguar, tiger, servals, lemurs, and other primates.

Hattiesburg, Miss., October 15, 2013 - William Carey University graduate (’71) Dr. G. Douglas Inglis, director and research professor at The Texas Tech University Center in Seville, Spain, will teach the course HIS 490/590: History of the Southern Frontier at WCU’s Hattiesburg campus during  J-Term January 6-10, 2014. The class, which counts for undergraduate or graduate credit, will be from 8 a.m. – 5 p.m. with an hour lunch break from 12 – 1 p.m. The cost is $340 per hour for the three-hour credit course.

Hattiesburg, Miss., October 15, 2013 - William Carey University held its fifth annual International Food Fair on October 10 in the Student Conference Center.  Booths were set up representing different countries, and each booth offered samples of food from that country. The booths were adorned in colorful decorations and flags from each country hung from the ceiling.
