The Winters School of Music and Ministry welcomes Zachary Harris to the Carey family.
Harris taught 31 years in Mississippi and recently retired as director of bands of Gulfport High School. The programs he directed achieved remarkable success. His concert bands have performed exhibitions at state band clinics, honor band clinics, and national music festivals. His marching and concert groups have consistently received superior ratings at evaluations and festivals.
He received numerous “director of the year” awards in the schools and districts he served. Upon his retirement from Gulfport High School, the City of Gulfport named a day in his honor due to his impact on the people of the city.
Harris, originally from Jackson, received a Bachelor of Music Education degree from Mississippi Valley State University and a Master of Music Education from the University of Mississippi. He is a member of Mississippi Bandmasters Association, where he is past president, Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia, and Phi Beta Mu, where he served on the executive board.
He will teach tuba and euphonium, mentor future educators in the Winters School of Music, and travel the region on behalf of William Carey University sharing his wealth of knowledge with wind band programs.
