WCU Presents Asbury Award To Local Medical Student

Hattiesburg, Miss., August 14, 2012 - Stephen G. Fletcher, second year medical student from Hattiesburg, was presented with the Asbury Award for academic excellence by William Carey University College of Osteopathic Medicine.  The Asbury Foundation of Hattiesburg endowed the award to recognize the student from the Asbury service area who achieves the highest grade point average during his/her freshman year.  Mr. William K. “Bill” Ray, president and CEO of the Asbury Foundation of Hattiesburg, Inc., presented Mr. Fletcher with a medallion and Dr. Tommy King, President of WCU, presented him with a check to apply to his medical education.  Dr. Darrell Lovins, Dean of the WCUCOM, shared information which led to the award at the 2012 White Coat Ceremony held in Smith Auditorium on August 11..

Preference is given to a student who intends to practice in Mississippi. Fletcher has a 3.47 GPA, resides in Lamar County and plans to practice in Mississippi. Fletcher was chosen for the award at the end of his first year of medical school.
