Hattiesburg, Miss., September 10, 2013 - The U. S. News and World Report rankings released today placed William Carey University #1 in “Best Value in the South among Regional Universities.” Carey is also ranked #36 among regional universities in the South. WCU’s ranking among regional universities increased significantly from #63 last year.

Hattiesburg, Miss., September 10, 2013 - United States Sen. Roger Wicker delivered the keynote address at the William Carey University "Building on a Firm Foundation" Scholarship Dinner held at Southern Oaks House and Gardens in Hattiesburg on Aug. 27. The annual dinner is held to raise money for scholarship endowment.  The evening included a VIP reception, dinner with musical entertainment and the address by Wicker.

Hattiesburg, Miss., September 10, 2013 - Cenergistic, a national energy conservation company, presented The Award for Energy Stewardship to William Carey University representatives on September 5. In the 15 months since forming a strategic alliance with Cenergistic, WCU has achieved a 17 percent cost savings totaling $289,168. The award recognizes WCU’s efforts to implement an innovative organizational behavior-based energy conservation and management program.

Hattiesburg, Miss., September 9, 2013 - University of Mississippi Medical Center pediatrician Dr. Hannah Gay, who has gained worldwide recognition for helping to cure an HIV-positive infant, will present a lecture at William Carey University on September 17 at 2 p.m. in Tatum Theatre. Dr. Gay was named one of Time magazine’s “100 Most Influential People in the World” for finding an apparent cure of this child, known as “The Mississippi Baby.”  Her lecture will deal with this subject.  Faculty, staff, and students are invited to attend.

Hattiesburg, Miss., September 4, 2013 - William Carey University recognized new employees during the Faculty and Staff General Assembly on August 22. Dr. Tommy King, president of WCU, led the assembly, which also included presentation of service awards, a challenge to the WCU family and, and a blessing of the 2013-2014 school year by Dr. Daniel Caldwell, dean of the Cooper School of Missions and Biblical Studies.

Hattiesburg, Miss., August 26, 2013 - The Lucile Parker Art Gallery at William Carey University will feature “An Exhibit of Works by Lucile Parker from the Brian Blair Collection” August 26 – September 20. An opening reception will be held on August 29 from 4:30 - 6 p.m. The gallery is now located at 512 Tuscan, on the bottom floor of the two-story building at the corner of Tuscan Avenue and Cherry Street.

Hattiesburg, Miss., August 23, 2013 - William Carey University hosted a Dedication Ceremony for Davis Hall, the newest women’s resident facility on the Hattiesburg campus, on August 22. The residence hall is named for Ralph and Cora Joyce Davis, alumni of Mississippi Woman’s College (WCU’s predecessor). Located directly behind Byrd Hall on the south end of campus, Davis Hall accommodates nearly 100 women to relieve the school’s housing crunch.

Hattiesburg, Miss., August 21, 2013 - Brittney J. Brown, a second-year William Carey University College of Osteopathic Medicine (WCUCOM) student from Poplarville, recently received the Asbury Award for Academic Excellence. The Asbury Foundation of Hattiesburg endowed the award to recognize the student from the Asbury service area who achieves the highest grade point average during his/her freshman year.  Mr. William K. “Bill” Ray, president and CEO of the Asbury Foundation of Hattiesburg, Inc., presented Brown with a check to apply to her medical education and Dr.

Hattiesburg, Miss., August 21, 2013 - William Carey University will hold the annual Endowed Scholarship Dinner featuring keynote speaker Sen. Roger Wicker at Southern Oaks House and Gardens on August 27. The evening will consist of a VIP reception and a dinner with musical entertainment by Miss Mississippi Chelsea Rick, who completed her first year of medical school at WCU, and an address by Sen. Wicker.

Hattiesburg, Miss., August 14, 2013 - Second-year William Carey University College of Osteopathic Medicine (WCUCOM) student Binh Q. Vu of Houston, Texas, has been chosen by the American Osteopathic Foundation’s (AOF) Board of Directors and its Committee on Grants and Awards to receive a 2013 Welch Scholars Grant for $2,000. Students were selected based on their academic achievement, participation in extracurricular activities, commitment to osteopathic medicine, and financial need.

Hattiesburg, Miss., August 13, 2013 - The William Carey University Smith Rouse Library will present an exhibit of its Bible facsimiles collection in the main foyer of the library on August 22-23 and August 26-30 from 8 a.m. – 5 p.m. This collection of Bible facsimiles demonstrates the development of Biblical translations that gradually served to place the Bible into the hands of laypersons, as well as how translations were impacted by the works of certain preceding translations. The exhibit is open to the public and free of charge.

Hattiesburg, Miss., August 13, 2013 - Celebrations of the 252nd birthday of Dr. William Carey, the “Father of Modern Missions” and William Carey University’s namesake will be held at 18 sites throughout the month. Carey was born on August 17, 1761, and each year, as part of Worldwide Carey Day, the university hosts gatherings and encourages alumni, students, and others associated with the university to honor his life.

Tradition, Miss., August 8, 2013 - William Carey University student Lucy Landry of Biloxi was awarded The Betty Dettre Visual Arts Scholarship on August 6 during a luncheon at the Country Club of Jackson. Mrs. Betty Dettre, a visual artist, established The Betty Body Dettre Library and Research Center at the National Museum of Women in the Arts in Washington, D.C., which is a special collection of research material on women artists.
