For the fourth consecutive year, William Carey University has been named a Champions of Character Five-Star Institution by the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA).
Carey was recognized as a silver institution with a score of 79 in the Champions of Character program, which focuses on the NAIA’s five core values of integrity, respect, responsibility, sportsmanship and servant leadership. The program works to instill these values through activities for student-athletes and professional development for coaches and staff.

State Superintendent of Education Dr. Carey Wright will be the featured speaker during a Phi Delta Kappa International Pine Belt chapter meeting at 6:30 p.m. on September 22 in Smith Auditorium on the William Carey University Hattiesburg campus.

The Lucile Parker Gallery at William Carey University is hosting the South Mississippi Art Association Juried Exhibition through September 17.
An opening reception was held on September 1 at the gallery, which is located at 512 Tuscan Avenue in Hattiesburg. The exhibition includes 33 works by 22 artists.

A dedication ceremony was held on September 3 for Futral Hall, the newest residence hall on the William Carey University Hattiesburg campus.
The building is named for Dr. Jim Futral, executive director-treasurer of the Mississippi Baptist Convention, and houses 96 male students in rooms with private baths. The hall is connected to Davis Hall, which was completed in 2013, and completes a quadrangle of new residence halls constructed on the south end of the campus since 2007.

The fifth annual William Carey University scholarship dinner, featuring retired federal judge Charles W. Pickering Sr. as the keynote speaker, was held on September 1 at Southern Oaks House and Gardens in Hattiesburg.
The evening included a VIP reception, dinner with musical entertainment from the Carey Chorale, scholarship presentations and Pickering’s address.

Two benches were dedicated in the Warren Prayer Garden on the William Carey University Hattiesburg campus on September 3 in memory of fallen Hattiesburg police officers Benjamin Deen and Liquori Tate.
The two benches were unveiled by Dr. Karla Pope, chair of Carey’s criminal justice program, and several criminal justice students. The benches are located in the prayer garden, which is adjacent to the Bass Memorial Chapel and near Chain Garden. The benches were purchased with a special gift from Joan Warren of Hattiesburg, a Carey trustee.

The William Carey University School of Education has reached its highest enrollment on record with 1,270 students, a 13.5 percent increase over last fall’s numbers.
Dr. Ben Burnett, dean of the School of Education, said the enrollment growth comes on the heels of a banner year for the school. Enrollment grew in each trimester of the 2014-2015 academic year, with an eight percent jump in the spring trimester alone.

The William Carey University Tradition campus in Biloxi has posted a record enrollment of 1,154 students for the fall 2015 academic term, which is the highest number of students in the university’s 40-plus years of service to the Mississippi Gulf Coast and a 22 percent increase from fall 2014.
