The 6th Annual Southern Strings Dulcimer Festival and the 1st Annual Deep South Dulcimer Competition were held in the Thomas Fine Arts Center at William Carey University February 23-25. Guest dulcimer instructors performed a free concert on February 25 before the evening competition.

William Carey University’s Speech and Debate Team won second place overall at the 2012 Mardi Gras Alumni Classic Tournament held at Louisiana State University in Baton Rouge, La., February 24-26. In March the team will compete in the Pi Kappa Delta National Speech and Debate Tournament in Kansas City. Last year, the team won second place overall at Nationals.

William Carey University will host a concert featuring the Baddour Center’s nationally recognized choir, The Miracles, on Thursday, March 1, at 7 p.m. in Smith Auditorium. The Baddour Center is a unique community in Senatobia where nearly 200 adults with intellectual disabilities live with their peers in group homes or shared apartments. Residents audition to be one of the 24 members of The Miracles, who travel around country and perform approximately 90 concerts a year. The group has been honored with invitations to perform at such venues as the John F.

Dr. Jim Futral, executive director-treasurer of the Mississippi Baptist Convention Board, was the guest speaker for William Carey University’s chapel on February 22 in Smith Auditorium. Accompanying Dr. Futral was Slater Murphy, a Carey alumnus and director of church music for the Mississippi Baptist Convention Board. Murphy served as guest music leader. The Carey Chorale performed prior to Dr. Futral’s message.

The William Carey University College of Osteopathic Medicine (WCUCOM) has established a partnership with Forrest General Hospital, enabling third-year medical students to perform their rotations at the hospital. To show WCU’s appreciation, Dr. Darrell Lovins, dean of the WCUCOM, and Dr. Tommy King, president of WCU, presented a plaque to Evan Dillard, president and CEO of Forrest General, on February 21. The WCUCOM has 603 preceptors from Mississippi, Louisiana, Tennessee, and Florida who have agreed to host the third year students for their clinical rotations.

William Carey University will offer a symposium for high school sophomores, juniors and seniors who are interested in health care careers on Saturday, March 3, from 9:30 a.m. – 12:30 p.m. During the sessions, students will discover employment trends in health care, as well as receive information about careers in medicine, nursing , mental health, and other allied health fields. Auditions for cast and interviews with crew for the 37th season of Carey Dinner Theatre (CDT) are Saturday, March 31, beginning at 10 a.m. in the Joe and Virginia Tatum Theatre on the Hattiesburg campus of William Carey University.
CDT presents two musicals in June and July. All members of the company, performers and staff, will be compensated. The financial package includes salary, tips (company members serve during dinner), and housing.

The William Carey University women’s golf team opened their season with a win against the University of New Orleans at Shadow Ridge Golf Club on Wednesday, February 15, in the Lady Crusaders debut at home. The Lady Crusaders represented themselves well, with a score of 362 over UNO’s 513. WCU’s 362 set a new single round record for the Lady Crusaders. Summer Struzinski finished with a score of 80, breaking WCU’s low round record for women’s golf.

Dr. Julie Smith-Rogers, associate professor of biological sciences at William Carey University, and her 12-year-old son, Brady, recently won the Stove Top Hero Cooking Video Contest cooking “Julie’s Mardi Gras Pasta.” Dr. Smith-Rogers has a blog entitled “Menu Musings of a Modern American Mom” through which she shares some of her favorite family-friendly recipes. One of the persons associated with the contest made a comment on the Food Network Facebook page about one of her recipes, and encouraged her to submit a video.

William Carey University recently signed Raleigh High School standout Lauren Little to play for the Lady Crusaders softball team. Little is the first recruit signed by the Lady Crusaders for the 2012-2013 recruiting class.
Little, a 5”10 All-State first baseman, posted impressive numbers during her junior season, hitting 608 with five homeruns, six triples, seven doubles and 40 runs batted in (RBIs). She spends her summers playing travel softball with the Mississippi Elite program.

A group of senior William Carey University business students enrolled in Strategic Management are participating in a Business Simulation Game (BSG) and for the week of January 12-29, ranked globally based on their company’s competitive performance in five specific areas. BSGs allow participants to experience the realities of strategic management in an interactive, virtual economy, competing with one another in a real-time competition.
