Melanie Wiseheart, MMT, MT-BC, is a board-certified music therapist specializing in trauma-informed care in mental health and reflective clinical practice. Mrs. Wiseheart has experience working with people of all ages in a person-centered, strengths-based approach in inpatient and outpatient mental health, medical care, neurological rehabilitation, addictions treatment, palliative and end of life care, developmental care for individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities, and neuro-affirmative wellness for autistic individuals. She also enjoys investing in music therapy students and interns and partnering with universities as a guest lecturer and workshop facilitator.
Mrs. Wiseheart joined the Winters School of Music faculty in 2022, where she oversees music therapy core curriculum, teaches music therapy courses, supervises clinical practica, and supports the William Carey University Student Music Therapy Organization. She holds a Master of Music Therapy from Augsburg University and a Bachelor of Music in Music Therapy from the University of Evansville. Originally from Indiana, she is the former President of the Association for Indiana Music Therapy and Executive Board member of the Great Lakes Region of the American Music Therapy Association, where she worked to support music therapists and students across the Great Lakes Region and advocate for title protection and state licensure in Indiana. Mrs. Wiseheart brings this experience to her role on the Mississippi State Task Force for Music Therapy, where she has played a leading role in organizing music therapy hill days at the Mississippi State Capitol. She is currently collaborating with state legislators to draft a bill for title protection for music therapists in Mississippi.
Mrs. Wiseheart enjoys scholarly writing and regularly shares her work at state, regional, and national conferences. Her most recent research focuses on the integration of reflective practice in music therapy practice, education, and clinical training in the U.S., which she presented at the 2023 Great Lakes Region of the AMTA Conference. In her free time, Mrs. Wiseheart volunteers her time on the praise team and in the children’s ministry at her church. She enjoys spending time with her husband and their two young daughters, playing sports and board games, reading, and cheering for Indiana Hoosiers basketball.
