WCU Student-Athletes Receive Halbrook Award
Hattiesburg, Miss., December 12, 2012 - William Carey University student-athletes Anna-Lauren Fontenot and Alex Lahasky were presented with the David M. Halbrook Award. The awards were presented during the Halbrook Awards Luncheon held at the Hattiesburg Lake Terrace Convention Center in October as part of the 79th annual Mississippi Association of Colleges and Universities (MAC) Conference hosted by WCU. Established by former Mississippi Representative David Halbrook and his brothers in honor of their parents, the Halbrook Award is given to student-athletes across the state who excel in academics, leadership, and community service.
Fontenot, a senior social sciences major from Waynesboro, is a catcher for the WCU Lady Crusaders softball team. After playing one season at Jones County Junior College, she came to Carey where she was selected as All-District six times, Team Most Valuable Player (MVP) three times, served as team captain twice, and was selected as Most Athletic. She also received the U. S. Army Scholar Athlete Award.
Lahasky, a senior social sciences major from Overland Park, Kan., is a third baseman for the Crusaders baseball team. He played two seasons at Johnson County Community College, where he was part of 77 wins in two years. While at JCCC, Lahasky earned the Pinnacle Award for Academic Excellence given by the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) to student-athletes with 4.0 GPAs.
