Gillespie Museum hosts “Emerging from the Storm” exhibit
The Sarah Ellen Gillespie Museum of Art will host an opening reception for the “Emerging from the Storm: Seldom Seen Paintings” exhibit on Tuesday, Oct. 10 from 4:30 to 6 p.m. The museum is located at the William Carey University Hattiesburg campus.
Following the January 21, 2017, tornado, the Sarah Ellen Gillespie collection was packed and moved to the Lauren Rogers Museum of Art in Laurel for recovery and assessment. Once the damaged works were stabilized, the collection was returned to Hattiesburg for further assessment and care. The museum has been fully repaired and is now open to the public again.
The “Emerging from the Storm” exhibit includes works “re-discovered” during close examination following the tornado. “Though all these works were cataloged and known to exist in the collection, they somehow escaped notice over the years after the collection was moved from the coast campus following Hurricane Katrina,” said Rick Wilemon, director of the Carey About Art program and museum exhibit curator.
Gallery hours are 1-4 p.m. Monday through Friday or by appointment. For more information, please call (601) 318-6561.
