William Carey University’s speech and debate team participated in a tournament held at Western Kentucky University in Bowling Green, Kentucky, Sept. 24 and 25.
Overall, the Carey team placed second in the First Tournament Sweepstakes, third place in the Second Tournament Sweepstakes, and third place in the Overall Sweepstakes.
The following students placed in the tournament:
Jake Trevino (senior; Houston, Texas): 3rd place in Prose Interpretation, 5th place in After Dinner Speaking;
Ryan Gosling (freshman; West Palm Beach, Florida): 2nd place in Program of Oral Interpretation, 4th place in After Dinner Speaking, 1st place in Program of Oral Interpretation;
Derek Collins (freshman, Hattiesburg): 4th place in Persuasive Speaking, 2nd place in Prose Interpretation, 6th place in Persuasive Speaking;
Damien Williams (senior; Mobile, Alabama): 5th place in Program of Oral Interpretation, 3rd place in Program of Oral Interpretation;
Branden Lindsay (senior; Greenville, South Carolina): 3rd place in Informative Speaking, 3rd place in Poetry Interpretation, 1st place in Duo Interpretation (with Kelseigh Redmon), 2nd place in Informative Speaking;
Kelseigh Redmon (senior; Nashville, Tennessee): 7th place in Poetry Interpretation, 1st place in Duo Interpretation (with Branden Lindsey), 5th place in Poetry Interpretation;
Nykila Norman (senior; Greenville, South Carolina): 4th place in Prose Interpretation, 6th place in Persuasive Speaking, 5th place in Prose Interpretation;
Micailah Nobles (junior; Round Rock, Texas): 5th place in Duo Interpretation (with Omari Hawkins), 4th Place in Duo Interpretation (with Omari Hawkins), 1st place in Poetry Interpretation;

The William Carey University speech and debate team is nationally ranked and recognized in the forensics community. The team offers the opportunity to compete in a wide variety of events (public speaking, limited preparation, interpretation, and parliamentary debate). The team travels to national tournaments. On-campus activities include talent showcases and in-class demonstrations. Jennifer Talbert is the director of forensics and coach for the speech and debate team.
