Shipmon crowned Miss William Carey

Jakolbia Shipmon was crowned Miss William Carey University at the annual scholarship pageant held March 8 at the Thomas Fine Arts Center.
The contestants were judged in fitness wear, talent, little black dress, on-stage interview, and a private interview held with judges prior to the pageant. For the talent competition, Shipmon presented “It’s A Wonderful World” by Louis Armstrong in sign language.
In addition to winning the crown, Shipmon also received the Amy E. Allen award, which is presented to the contestant with the highest GPA.
Shipmon is a freshman from Ocean Springs. She is studying business with a concentration in marketing and hopes to become a market analyst after graduation. Her hobbies include reading and journaling. She enjoys volunteering with the apartment ministry through BSU. As pageant winner, she received a $2,000 scholarship.
Kahdejah Moody of Laurel was the runner-up. She sang “Hallelujah” by Jeff Buckley for the talent competition. She is a music education major and mathematics minor. As pageant runner-up, she received an $800 scholarship.
Moody also received the Virginia Scott Spirit Award, which is voted on by the contestants. The award is named in honor of Virginia Scott, who was director of the Miss Carey pageant from 1972 until 1985 and produced three Miss Mississippi winners. She established a legacy of grace and excellence in the lives of young women.
Ashlyn Stringfellow, a sophomore from Lucedale who is studying chemistry, and Raechel Abney, an elementary education and intercultural studies major from Diamond Head, also participated in the pageant.
“Classic Hollywood” was the pageant theme and featured the Carey Company Show Choir performing “All That Jazz.” The Knights of Jazz combo entertained the audience. Mikaela Green and Tom Overton were the emcees for the evening.
