Education major receives MPE scholarship
WCU education major Kristin Steele receives a Linda Anglin Teacher Preparation Scholarship from Kelly Riley, executive director of Mississippi Professional Educators.
William Carey University education major Kristen Steele received a 2018 Linda Anglin Teacher Preparation Scholarship from Mississippi Professional Educators. The $500 award can be used for educational or living expenses. In addition to the scholarship, Steele received a complimentary MPE membership for her first year of teaching.
Steele is a President’s List scholar and member of Alpha Chi honor society. She is also a student teacher at Oak Grove Lower Elementary School. Dr. June Hornsby, director of field experiences for the WCU School of Education, will make four visits to Steele’s classroom during a 13-week residency.
“Kristen is very knowledgeable and caring as she works with her low-performing students. She tailors her lessons to their abilities and interests. She wants to make an impact in their lives, change their career trajectory and give them a chance for success,” Hornsby said.
“She has wonderful rapport with her students and with her host teacher – who wants to keep her.”
This wish might come true. Steele, a resident of Purvis, would like to teach at Oak Grove after graduation or at another elementary school within commuting distance.
Mississippi Professional Educators is Mississippi’s largest organization for professional educators, serving approximately 14,000 teachers, administrators and support personnel in pre-K through graduate education. It offers an annual scholarship to an MPE student member from each of Mississippi’s 15 public and private institutions of higher learning.
