WCU medical school welcomes Class of 2023
William Carey University College of Osteopathic Medicine hosted a traditional “white coat ceremony” Aug. 3 for its incoming class of medical students. The white coat ceremony signals a student’s entry into the study of medicine.
Dr. Italo Subbarao, WCUCOM dean, said more than 3,000 applicants competed for WCU’s 100 available openings.
Here’s a look at the 10th incoming WCUCOM class:
- The students come from 25 states. Mississippi leads the way with 21 students, followed by Texas with 19, Florida with 12, Louisiana with 10, California with eight and Michigan with four. This year, WCUCOM welcomes its first students from Idaho and New Hampshire.
- The Class of 2023 also includes five Canadians.
- There are 64 men and 39 women in the new class.
- Among them, the 103 students have earned 108 bachelor’s degrees and 28 master’s degrees. Two students have already earned degrees at the doctoral level – a Doctor of Pharmacy and a Doctor of Podiatric Medicine.
