WCU offers bachelor’s degree in dance
The Winter’s School of Music at William Carey University announces the addition of a bachelor’s degree in dance to its program offerings.
“This highly innovative degree program gives students the opportunity to develop a career and live out their passion. I’m excited to see what it will mean for young people across our region,” said Dr. Wes Dykes, dean of the Winter’s School.
Students can take dance classes tailored to their individual goals and performance opportunities are available starting in the first term of the freshman year.
“The curriculum includes 17 elective credits, which students can use to develop additional skills for the lives they envision,” said Assistant Professor Katie Ginn, director of the dance program.
“A dancer who wants to open their own studio and teach might take business classes. If you want to work at a regional theatre, you might combine your choreography skills with lighting or costume design classes. Students who see themselves working for a church might use their electives to learn about worship technology. It depends on how you want to integrate dance into your life.”
Ginn joined William Carey University as an adjunct instructor in 2012. She went full-time in 2017, developing and expanding class offerings and performance events as the university worked to build a bachelor’s degree in dance.
“We’re looking for students who are passionate about dance – but are also self-starters who want to positively impact their communities,” she said.
