Dr. Jude Haney wins statewide 2021 Educator Award
Dr. Jude Haney of William Carey University won the statewide 2021 Educator Award during the Mississippi Health Information Management Association’s (MSHIMA) annual convention.
MSHIMA is a network of health information management professionals in Mississippi. This year’s convention was held virtually June 23-25 due to the recent surge of COVID-19 cases.
Haney is director of WCU Health Information Management, a bachelor’s degree program that prepares graduates to maintain information systems for healthcare organizations, handle changing data technology, and abide by the ethical and regulatory requirements of their profession.
Nominated for the 2021 Educator Award by two students and one colleague, Haney received high praise for the way he interacted with students during the pandemic.
“He maintained high academic standards at all times, but he thought about the human angle, too. He listened to his students and adjusted teaching methods as needed. He checked in on students and their families and offered positive messages and encouragement,” said Dr. Janet Williams, WCU associate vice president for health programs.
Under Haney’s leadership, the Health Information Management program transitioned last year from a hybrid format to an all-online format.
“This makes the program more accessible because students can take 100 percent of their classes online. It removes geographical limitations for students and gives more flexibility to working students who want to pursue a degree in this growing healthcare career field,” Haney said.
During the convention, MSHIMA also awarded a scholarship to Jade Hayes of Petal, who will be a third-year student this fall in William Carey University’s Health Information Management program.
