In accordance with COCA accreditation standards, William Carey University College of Osteopathic Medicine (WCUCOM) requires proof of insurance at the beginning of each semester. In order to best serve our students, WCUCOM partnered with United Health Care (UHC) to provide students with an affordable, reliable healthcare plan. In order to provide an affordable option, WCUCOM requires enrollment in the UHC plan with the following exemptions which are considered on a case-by-case basis:

  1. Student is enrolled under parent/spousal insurance
  2. Student is enrolled in Medicaid, military, or a similar governmental insurance
  3. International student enrolled in the GeoBlue plan

Students are automatically enrolled in the healthcare plan at the beginning of the academic year (the “Open Enrollment Period”) and all student accounts are charged for six (6) months of insurance each semester. To waive the insurance policy and have the charge removed, students must submit the waiver request through the form provided by the WCUCOM Office of Student Affairs, and a letter of credible coverage from the insurance company, proving their coverage under a qualifying waiver.

Waivers and deadlines are emailed to the students prior to the beginning of the semester by a member of the Office of Student Affairs. Deadlines are strictly adhered to and students will be charged the total amount of insurance if qualified waivers are not submitted in a timely manner. This fee will be charged in the both the Fall and Spring semester if a waiver is not submitted by the deadline each Fall. “Open Enrollment Period” is not active during the Spring semester. Students cannot receive insurance benefits after the Fall deadline without a qualifying event.

Questions concerning the WCUCOM insurance guidelines can be directed to the Office of Student Affairs at 601.318.6385.
