Carey Student Newspaper Wins State Honors
The Cobbler, the student newspaper of William Carey University, earned several awards during the 2014-2015 Better Newspaper Contest - Student Division, hosted by the Mississippi Press Association Education Foundation.
Editor-in-Chief and Sports Editor Michael Coelho, a senior business major from Niceville, Fla., won first place in the ";Best Sports Feature"; category for a column about the impact of the late Dr. Milton Wheeler, a longtime member of the Carey faculty. Managing Editor Adrienne Madden, a sophomore biology and chemistry major from Purvis, won third place in the same category for an article about Steve Knight, head men's basketball coach and director of athletics at Carey, and his family's ties to the university.
Features Columnist Jordan James, a senior business major from Moselle, won second place in the ";Best General Interest Column"; for a series of movie reviews throughout the academic year. The Cobbler staff also earned a second place in the ";Best Layout and Design"; category for the second consecutive year.
The Cobbler, published seven times per academic year, competes in the senior colleges and universities division of the contest. Joshua Wilson, marketing specialist, serves as advisor. The awards were presented during the annual O.C. McDavid Journalism Conference held March 26 at the Mississippi Craft Center in Ridgeland.
