The WCU Dyslexia Therapy Program provides therapy training through a comprehensive Orton-Gillingham Based Structured Literacy Approach. After completion of the program, graduates are eligible for state licensure as a Dyslexia Therapist through the MS Department of Education, and are eligible to sit for the Alliance Exam for becoming a Nationally Certified Academic Language Therapist (CALT), and the International Dyslexia Association’s Exam through the Center for Effective Reading Instruction (CERI). The program is accredited through the International Dyslexia Association (IDA) and the International Multisensory Structured Language Education Council (IMSLEC).

Program Overview


This program is 30 hours and may be completed in two years or 24 months. The program begins only in the Summer trimester.

Delivery Method

This program is offered in a convenient hybrid format, perfect for working students. Classes are held face to face for two weeks over two summers and on one Saturday per trimester. Therapists in training are supervised as they gain experience while working with struggling readers over the two-year training period. Students will work with struggling readers to acquire 720 clinical hours of dyslexia therapy. All online courses are offered via Canvas.

Applicant Prerequisites & Requirements

Prospective students must:

Complete an online application & pay application fee

Submit all official transcripts electronically to Graduate Admissions

Have a GPA of 2.50 for the last 64 hours of undergraduate work or a cumulative GPA of 2.50

Hold a baccalaureate degree from an accredited college or university

Hold or qualify to hold a Class A teacher’s license and provide a copy

Provide two recommendations from past or current supervisors

NOTE: Non-education candidates must sign a waiver of a teacher’s license prior to beginning coursework
