Work-Study FAQ's
Work-study programs benefit college students by providing them with opportunities to earn money, gain valuable work experience, and develop important professional skills, all while balancing their academic responsibilities.
The work-study program provides students with part-time employment opportunities to help meet the costs of educational expenses by promoting access to meaningful work experiences.
Currently, students are responsible for obtaining a position by networking with different departments on campus for availability of a work-study position.
To qualify students must:
- Be admitted to a degree program.
- Maintain satisfactory academic progress.
International students can participate in the institutional work-study program. International students with work authorization are permitted to work. However, there are several steps that all international students must follow prior to being hired to work as a student worker. For further information on eligibility, please contact Hannah Beth Prescott at HPrescott@wmcarey.edu.
- Complete FAFSA.
- Complete the Student Worker Application located in your Indigo Portal, apply using your student email address.
- Confirm you have a position lined up with a department, and the correct forms were submitted by your supervisor.

After completing the requirements from Financial Aid and Human Resources. The Office of Financial Aid will consult with your supervisor to determine the number of hours you are eligible to work. This information will be included in your final approval email from Financial Aid, after your work-study orientation.
Once cleared by the Financial Aid office, you will be sent a notification of hire email from Human Resources with a Human Resources Work-Study checklist attached for your convenience. In the notification of hire email, you will be provided a link to access the remaining steps to complete prior to your start date by Human Resources. The student must complete the required onboarding tasks, prior to the work-study orientation date.
A part of your onboarding tasks is completing the Form I-9, Employment Eligibility Verification and prove your identity and ability to work in the United States. On your first day of employment, you will be required to provide acceptable I-9 documents during your work-study orientation. Provided here is a list of acceptable I-9 documents. Failure to provide the required hiring documents or meet employment eligibility requirements in the Unites States will make a candidate ineligible for hire or result in the withdrawal of an offer of employment. Students are not allowed to begin working in their work-study position until Financial Aid sends an approval email, with an assigned hire date, after your orientation.
Work-Study orientation is a required 30-minute session typically scheduled on the first day of each term. All work-study students are required to participate in compliance training, including sexual harassment and pass the associated quiz. In addition, during this time you will be given policies and tips to succeed in your work-study position.
In your onboarding email, you will be provided with a link to register for available times to attend orientation. If you are not available to attend any of the scheduled times, you will be notified in the email a contact person to request a different arrangement.
Failure to attend the required work-study orientation may result in you not participating in the work study program for that requested term. Students are not allowed to begin working in their work study position until Financial Aid sends an approval email, with assigned hire date, after your orientation.
