The Office of Continuing Medical Education (CME) at WCUCOM aims to deliver educational programs that provide knowledge to the faculty and medical community and to support the mission of WCUCOM. To achieve this mission, the Office of CME will identify and implement learning opportunities that will enhance the lifelong learning experience of its participants.

Thank you for your interest in planning a CME Activity with the William Carey University College of Osteopathic Medicine (WCUCOM) Office of Continuing Medical Education (CME). This form provides space for planners to provide a brief overview of the proposed CME activity to ensure it aligns with the mission and accreditation requirements of the WCUCOM Office of CME.

If a proposed activity is considered viable for CME credit, the Office of CME will ask you to provide further details and documentation via the CME Planning Form. Please note: Initial proposal and planning of an activity does not constitute final approval of CME credit. Activity approval and credit designations are not final until all required materials and information have been submitted to and reviewed by the WCUCOM Office of CME.

Please note that the completed CME Planning Form and supporting documentation must be received at least 6-8 weeks prior to the proposed conference date. Applications will not be considered until all items are received. 

Materials must be approved by the Continuing Medical Education Specialist prior to duplication and distribution. (Including email marketing/promotional materials). The Office of CME notifies the application’s contact person(s) of the accreditation status and provides language that MUST be used on marketing materials for the program.


30 days in advance of the planned activity

  1. Signed copies of the Disclosure Declaration for all speakers
  2. Powerpoint presentation (if applicable)
  3. Bio or CVs of all speakers
  4. Names and credentials of all presenters

Within 30 days after the planned activity

  1. Copies of final brochure and other promotional/marketing documents.
  2. Final program agenda
  3. Original sign-in sheet/Attendance log with names and email addresses
  4. Attestation forms by all attendees requesting AOA CME.
  5. List of all commercial supporters (if applicable)
  6. Documentation showing how the program disclosure process occurred (slide presentation, verbally prior to start of program, etc)
  7. Final budget
  8. The Office of CME will forward certificates of attendance when all material is received

Goals

The Office of CME strives to meet the following goals:

  • Provide quality, evidence-based educational opportunities designed to enhance the skills and knowledge of physicians and other health professionals with an overall goal of improving the health outcomes of diverse patient populations
  • Assist physicians and other health professionals in meeting their CME licensure requirements

Purpose

Educational activities serve to maintain, develop, or increase the knowledge, skills, and professional performance and relationships a physician uses to provide services for patients, the public, or the profession. CME represents that body of knowledge and skills generally recognized and accepted by the profession as within the basic medical sciences, the discipline of clinical medicine, and the provision of health care to the public.

Grievances will be handled on an individual basis and can be submitted in writing via email to CME@wmcarey.edu for review. All grievances will receive a written response within 30 days of receipt. If the CME Specialist cannot resolve the issue, the grievance will be referred to the Director of CME. If the Director of CME does not resolve the grievance, it is referred to the Dean

Osteopathic physicians only: Further appeals shall be addressed to the Council on Osteopathic Continuing Medical Education of the AOA at 142 E. Ontario St., Chicago, IL 60611-2864, or via phone (888) 62-MYAOA.

WHO IS ELIGIBLE TO RECEIVE CME CREDIT FOR THE MEDICAL TEACHING OF WCUCOM OSTEOPATHIC MEDICAL STUDENTS?

Any DO or MD who has provided formal delivery of medical education lectures at the College of Osteopathic Medicine and been verified by the Office of Continuing Medical Education is eligible for the appropriate credential-based CME credit for medical teaching.

HOW DO I CLAIM CME CREDIT FOR THE MEDICAL TEACHING OF WCUCOM OSTEOPATHIC MEDICAL STUDENTS?

To request CME credit for medical teaching, read the guidelines, and complete the form found at the following link: Teaching Credit Report Form AOA 1A Credit . Medical teaching hours will no longer be accepted via email; all requests for CME credit must be submitted using the online form.

WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN DO AND MD MEDICAL TEACHING CME CREDIT?

  • DO: Time spent in the formal delivery of medical education lectures to WCUCOM osteopathic students is eligible for AOA Category 1-A credit and will be reported to the American Osteopathic Association (AOA) on your behalf.
  • MD: Time spent in the formal delivery of medical education lectures to WCUCOM osteopathic students is eligible for AOA Category 1-A credit and may be self-reported to national medical organizations and/or state medical licensing boards by the individual physician.

HOW ARE MEDICAL TEACHING CME HOURS CALCULATED?

  • CME credit is awarded on an hour-for-hour basis for delivered lectures.
  • CME credit will not be awarded for preparation of lectures.

HOW OFTEN IS CME CREDIT PROCESSED FOR MEDICAL TEACHING?

Only medical teaching hours submitted through the online medical teaching credit form will be processed. The online form may be accessed at: Teaching Credit Report Form AOA 1A Credit. Medical teaching hours submitted through this online form are processed twice per year. Medical teaching hours for DO physicians are reported to the AOA by the WCUCOM Office of Continuing Medical Education. All physician teachers (MD and DO) will receive a confirmation letter at the end of each period for self-reporting and documentation purposes. One month is given post-reporting period to submit medical teaching hours. After this timeframe, CME credit may be forfeited.

HOW DO I DOCUMENT MY MEDICAL TEACHING CME HOURS?

When medical teaching  hours are submitted through the online medical teaching reporting form, you will receive an automated confirmation email that contains a summary of your submission. This email can be used to document your CME credit. Additionally, after the semi-annual processing of submitted medical teaching hours, you will receive an email with a certificate of participation summarizing any hours that you submitted for CME credit during the previous reporting period.

WHO IS ELIGIBLE TO RECEIVE CME CREDIT FOR PRECEPTING WCUCOM OSTEOPATHIC MEDICAL STUDENTS?

Any DO or MD who has completed the credentialing process and has been approved to take osteopathic medical students on a clinical rotation is eligible for the appropriate credential-based CME credit for UGME preceptors.

HOW DO I CLAIM CME CREDIT FOR PRECEPTING WCUCOM OSTEOPATHIC MEDICAL STUDENTS?

To request CME credit for precepting WCUCOM osteopathic medical students, read the guidelines, and complete the form found at the following link: WCUCOM- Request for Preceptor Credit – Physicians.  Preceptor hours will no longer be generated from electronic student evaluations or accepted via email; all requests for CME credit must be submitted using the online form.

WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN DO AND MD PRECEPTOR CME CREDIT?

  • DO: Time spent precepting WCUCOM osteopathic students is eligible for AOA Category 1-B credit and will be reported to the American Osteopathic Association (AOA) on your
  • MD: Time spent precepting WCUCOM osteopathic medical students is eligible for AOA Category 1-B credit and may be self-reported to national medical organizations and/or state medical licensing boards by the individual

HOW ARE PRECEPTOR CME HOURS CALCULATED?

  • CME credit is awarded on a per-hour basis, not to exceed 40 hours per week. For example, a physician cannot claim more than 80 hours for a 2-week rotation or more than 160 hours for a 4- week rotation.
  • If the student spent time with more than one physician during a single rotation, each individual physician cannot claim the amount of credit commensurate with the entire For example, if a WCUCOM osteopathic medical student had a 1-week rotation in a single practice and spent time with two preceptors, both physicians cannot claim the full 40 hours.
  • If a preceptor has multiple students during the same period of time, CME credit is not multiplied by the total number of students precepted by the physician. For example, if a preceptor has two students for a 4-week rotation, only 160 hours can be

HOW OFTEN IS CME CREDIT PROCESSED FOR PRECEPTORS?

Only preceptor hours submitted through the online preceptor credit form will be processed. Preceptors access the form here, WCUCOM- Request for Preceptor Credit - Physicians. Preceptor hours submitted through this online form are processed quarterly. Preceptor hours for DO physicians are reported to the AOA by the WCUCOM Office of Continuing Medical Education. All preceptors (MD and DO) receive a confirmation letter at the end of each period for self-reporting and documentation purposes. One month is given post-reporting period to submit your preceptor hours. After this timeframe, CME credit may be forfeited.
