Numerous scholarships have been endowed by generous supporters of William Carey University. Students and prospective students may apply for these scholarships in the Financial Aid Office. New applications must be received by April 1st of each year to be considered for the following academic year. Scholarships are for one academic year. Recipients of scholarships must reapply each year by February 15 if they wish to continue the scholarship. Applicants will be notified in early summer..
All Endowed and Restricted Scholarships are open for application from January 1 to April 1.
- THE ALUMNI SCHOLARSHIP was established by alumni of the university to assist the child or grandchild of an alumnus. Children of employees of the university are not eligible.
- THE AMBROSE MEMORIAL ART SCHOLARSHIP was established in memory of Marc Carroll Ambrose, Betty Rainer Ambrose, and Charles Ambrose by family and friends. Charles Ambrose taught art at William Carey College from 1982-1988. The scholarship awards are made to art majors.
- THE VIRGINIA ANGELICO AND JOSEPH FRANKLIN TATUM SCHOLARSHIP
- THE ASBURY ENDOWED COM SCHOLARSHIP was established by the Asbury Foundation of Hattiesburg, this scholarship is given to the freshman student from the eight county service area who has the highest GPA during the first year of medical school. Preference is given to a student who is committed to practice in Mississippi. A stipend from the endowment accompanies the award and will be credited to the recipient’s tuition.

- THE LILLIAN LOTT AULTMAN MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP was established in 1968 by the family of Lillian Lott Aultman, a 1952 graduate of Mississippi Woman’s College to honor her memory. The scholarship is awarded to a student in the field of religious education.
- THE HOWARD WILSON BAHR SCHOLARSHIP was established in 1989 from the estate of Dr. Howard Wilson Bahr, benefactor of the university, to support worthy students.
- THE BESSIE MISTERFELDT BAILEY MEMORIAL FUND was established in 1992 from Ms. Bailey’s estate for the purpose of aiding needy students.

BILL AND JILL BAKER ENDOWED SCHOLARSHIP has been established in 2010 in appreciation for the years of teaching and service Dr. Bill Baker gave to William Carey University as a faculty member on the coast campus and for the Bakers’ long commitment to Christian education. The scholarship is granted to a deserving Christian student.
- THE BRYANT BARNES ENDOWED SCHOLARSHIP was established in 2014 and is awarded to a needy and worthy church related vocations student. .
- THE ROBERT E. BARNES ENDOWED SCHOLARSHIP was established by Mr. Robert Barnes, a 1960 alumnus and faithful supporter of William Carey University. Awards are made to students with high moral standards, good academic standing, and financial need.
- THE SALLY HARTNESS BATSON MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP was established in 1986 by the children of Mrs. Batson. Income from the fund is used to provide financial assistance to students preparing for careers in early childhood/elementary education.
- THE TRUGEN BEARD MINISTERIAL SCHOLARSHIP was established by Miss Trugen Beard from her estate in honor of Dr. William M. Clawson and is awarded annually to a Southern Baptist student preparing for the preaching ministry.

- THE REX BRASWELL WORK AND SERVICE SCHOLARSHIP was established to honor the memory of the late Rex Braswell, former member of the board of trustees and active layman in the Baptist denomination. It is awarded to church-related vocations and business students who are committed to working their way through college.
- THE DOROTHY BRELAND SCHOLARSHIP IN MEDICAL TECHNOLOGY was established by local physicians for scholarship awards to outstanding Hattiesburg area students majoring in either nursing or medical technology.
- THE JENNIE LOU BRELAND MUSIC SCHOLARSHIP was established in 2001 by friends and family of Mrs. Breland in honor of her many years of service to William Carey College as an instructor of piano and music education. It is awarded to students majoring in music.

Income from the corpus, operated by the Mississippi Baptist Foundation, is used to provide assistance to worthy and needy students as chosen by the scholarship committee.
- THE CLARA BAUR BUSH MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP was established by Wayne M. and Mary Alice Lovern in memory of Mrs. Bush, a church organist and music teacher in Hattiesburg for many years, and in honor of the Hattiesburg Music Club, of which she was a member. This fund will provide scholarships for students majoring in church-related music studies.
- THE ANNIE P. SMITH BUTLER ENDOWED SCHOLARSHIP was established in 2007 by Dr. Walter Butler, family, and friends to honor the memory of his wife. It is awarded to an elementary or secondary education major.

Awards one scholarship per academic year to one deserving student at William Carey University who has maintained at least a 3.0 cumulative gpa, is either a junior or senior in Nursing, has demonstrated leadership skills, and has demonstrated a commitment to community through Nursing.
- THE LILLIAN KUNKEL CATES CLINICAL SERVICE SCHOLARSHIP was established in 2017 in memory of Lillian Kunkel Cates, is awarded to a Doctor of Physical Therapy student or students who pursue a clinical education rotation that furthers the healing ministry of Christ in an especially Iow resource locale. Priority is given to students choosing to participate in mandatory or elective international clinical rotations.
- THE CHISHOLM FOUNDATION ENDOWED SCHOLARSHIP FOR THE WINTERS SCHOOL OF MUSIC was established by the president of the Chisholm Foundation and managing trustee, Mrs. Jean C. Lindsey, this scholarship reflects Mrs. Lindsey’s support for the arts and honors her parents’ interest in music. It is awarded to a deserving student in the Winters School of Music.
- THE DR. AND MRS. WILLIAM CLAWSON ENDOWED SCHOLARSHIP was established in 2003 by the Clawsons to benefit a serious and needy student majoring in pastoral ministry. Dr. Clawson taught at William Carey College from 1965-1988, and served as chair of the department of biblical studies for 11 years. The recipient of the award must maintain a minimum overall GPA of 2.5 while attending the university.

- THE LINDA E. COMMANDER MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP was established in 2005 by Linda’s mother, Sarah Commander, and many friends. Linda Commander attended William Carey College and served as director of its Keesler Center. The scholarship recipient is chosen on the basis of financial need, with priority given to students attending the Biloxi campus.

The scholarship was funded by Judge Sebe Dale, Jr. and Camille Dale to honor his mother for her life and memory as an alumna.
- THE JOSEPHINE D’ARPA SCHOLARSHIP was established in 2009 in honor of Josephine Alice D’Arpa on the occasion of her retirement as associate professor of music for 44 years and chapter advisor for Delta Omicron. This endowment provides scholarships for students majoring in the field of music.

- THE RONNIE HARRINGTON MEMORIAL ENDOWED BASEBALL SCHOLARSHIP was established by Ronnie Harrington's wife, Georgia Beldekas Harrington (class of 1978), and their sons, John and Michael. - THE DR. HUBERT L. KEASLER, JR. MEMORIAL ENDOWED SCHOLARSHIP was established in 2016 by the Keasler family in memory of Dr. Hubert L. Keasler, Jr., who served as the Dean of WCU’s School of Business from 2000 to 2005, and as an Associate Professor of Business from 1999 until he retired in 2008. The endowed scholarship is used to provide financial assistance to a student majoring in business administration, with preference to a concentration in accounting.

Dr. Pearson was a physician, a writer, a member of the WCU board of trustees, and one of the founders of the Hattiesburg Clinic. Mrs. Pearson was a homemaker and a leader in her church and community. Both were strong advocates for social justice. The scholarship fund in their honor is designated for qualified students who needs assistance to obtain a college education.

ROSS AWARD FOR EXCELLENCE IN ANATOMY was established in 2012, this scholarship recognizes the outstanding freshman medical student from Mississippi with the highest GPA in Anatomy. The recipient is encouraged to practice in Mississippi. Dr. Randolph and Brenda Ross have been generous supporters of the WCU COM from its inception. Dr. Ross is a practicing urologist in Hattiesburg. A stipend from the endowment accompanies the award and it credited to the recipient’s tuition.

- THE LORENA ROSEBERRY AND DUMAS L. SMITH SCHOLARSHIP was established in memory of Lorena Roseberry Smith and Dumas L. Smith, benefactors of the university, this scholarship is awarded to students majoring in religion, business, or other professions of service.
- THE DAVID AND CONNIE SPENCER ENDOWED SCHOLARSHIP FOR CHRISTIAN MINISTRIES was established in 2017. It awards one scholarship per academic year to a deserving student at William Carey University who meets the following criteria:
-Declared major and student commitment to a church related vocation
-Active member of a Southern Baptist Church
-A demonstrated record of personal merit and financial need
-Preference will be given to students from churches formerly pastored by Dr. Spencer which are: First Baptist Church, Milton FL; First Baptist Church, Long Beach; MS; First Baptist Church, Sulligent, AL; Camp Ground Baptist Church, Water Valley MS; and Fishing Creek Baptist Church, Aventon NC.

- THE JOHN W. AND EMMA RAWLS STORY MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP was established by Dr. and Mrs. L. E. Green as a memorial to her parents, to be awarded to needy, worthy students with preference to be given to Story/Green descendents through the fourth generation.
- THE KATIE ROSE AND HARDIN T. MCCLENDON ENDOWED SCHOLARSHIP was established in 2014 by the McClendon family to honor their commitment to higher education. The scholarship is awarded each academic year to one or more deserving students at William Carey University who is in need, maintains at least a 2.5 gpa, has demonstrated a lifestyle and testimony commensurate of a follower of Jesus Christ, and is active in community service.
- THE MADGE AND LEWIS VON KANEL ENDOWED SCHOLARSHIP was established by Michael Von Kanel (’72), Randall Von Kanel (’75), Danny Von Kanel (’77) and Merita Von Kanel Smith, to honor their parents’ legacy of faith, love, sacrifice, and support. The fund also includes gifts from friends and family as a memorial to the Von Kanels’ involvement and commitment to the local church. The scholarship is designated for Church Music majors and/or students attending William Carey University from the Cayman Islands.
- THE MARTHA B. PIERCE MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP is awarded to the First Runner up of the Miss WCU Pageant.

- THE SCHAMBER-JONES ENDOWED SCHOLARSHIP was established by Mrs. Sharon B. Schamber-Jones, the widow of Mr. Albert E. “Bert” Schamber, and by Mr. Danny P. Jones, the widower of Mrs. Alice Marie Dearman Jones. The scholarship supports the education of students who have been widowed. Students who have remarried are still eligible. Students must be U.S. citizens.
- THE WADDLE FAMILY ENDOWED SCHOLARSHIP was established in 2016. Awards one scholarship per academic year to one deserving student at William Carey University who is a basketball or baseball player, and has demonstrated record of personal merit and need.
- THE WILLIAM AND THERESA BANKS ENDOWED SCHOLARSHIP is awarded to students majoring in Business, deserving with good character, maintain 3.0 gpa (unless working then 2.5 gpa is acceptable), preference should be given to students working full or part time. The recipient shall be selected by the university endowed scholarship committee.
- THE RUBY M. THOMPSON SCHOLARSHIP was established in 1986 by Ms. Ruby M. Thompson of Clinton, Mississippi, an alumna of Mississippi Woman's College, for the purpose of scholarship endowment.
- THE ROY AND ROY WAYNE WELFORD MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP is awarded annually to a chemistry major upon the recommendation of the chairman of the department of chemistry.
- THE ROBERT AND LINDA DONNELL ENDOWED SCHOLARSHIP FOR MISSIONS was established in 2018 by Robert and Linda Donnell to give a well-rounded student the opportunity to complete mission work across the globe.
- THE WESLEY AND RACHEL OWENS ENDOWED SCHOLARSHIP honors the parents of Mr. Gene Owens. Mr. and Mrs. Wesley Owens have been life time educators while teaching in the Lamar County School System in Sumrall and Purvis.
- THE GRACE SELLERS CHAIN SCHOLARSHIP was established in 1979 by Mr. Bobby Chain, prominent businessman of Hattiesburg, in honor of his mother. An annual scholarship will be presented to one or two needy Southern Baptist church related vocational students who have expressed and demonstrated a strong interest in and commitment to missions. The student(s) should have a 3.0 GPA.
- THE ALON AND EDNA COLLETTI SCHOLARSHIP was established by family and friends to honor Reverend Alon, a Carey alumnus, and Mrs. Edna Colletti. The scholarship is awarded annually to a married music education or church music major.
- THE A.M. TATE LEGACY SCHOLARSHIP was established to honor the legacy of A.M. Tate, who served Mississippi Woman’s College as football coach during the 1950’s.
- THE BOB CRUMPTON SCHOLARSHIP was established in memory of a civic and denominational leader of Pensacola, Florida, and is given to a theatre major.
- THE COCA-COLA SCHOLARSHIP is awarded by Coca-Cola to support outstanding students at William Carey University.
- THE DEBRA HERRING SCHOLARSHIP FOR EDUCATION MAJORS was established in 2016 to award a deserving undergraduate student who plans to major in education and attends the Tradition Campus.
- THE REV. E. L. HOWARD AND MRS. GENEVA HOWARD SCHOLARSHIP was established in 2007 by The Memorial Hospital Auxiliary in honor of Rev. and Mrs. Howard, scholarships are awarded to deserving nursing students at William Carey University on the Coast with preference given to students from Harrison County.
- THE LYDIA MARIA INGLIS-REDONDO SCHOLARSHIP FOR STUDY IN SPAIN established in 2007, honors the daughter of Dr. G. Douglas Inglis (’72) and provides support for William Carey University students participating in The Texas Tech University Center in Sevilla, studying for one term in Spain.
- THE ROBERT G. LIGHTSEY MEMORIAL MUSIC RESTRICTED SCHOLARSHIP was established in 2008 in memory of Robert G. Lightsey, whose God-given musical talent, leadership skills, teaching abilities and love for God’s word influenced many lives. The scholarship provides support for students with financial need who are majoring in music or a music-related field of study.
- THE WALLACE M. AND JACKIE T. MALONE CHORAL SCHOLARSHIP was established in 2007 by Dr. Mark Hugh Malone in honor and memory of his parents. Awards are made to graduate music students who exhibit exceptional potential in the field of music education. Graduate students who plan to teach at the elementary, middle, or high school levels and have earned a grade point average of 3.0 or higher are eligible for scholarship consideration.
- THE LOIS MCKENZIE HUMANITARIAN COM RESTRICTED SCHOLARSHIP was established in 2012 and named in honor of Mrs. McKenzie, the scholarship is awarded to a top second-year College of Osteopathic Medicine student from South Mississippi who shows an interest in practicing medicine in Mississippi and working with the elderly.
- THE DOROTHEA VAN DEUSEN OPDYKE SCHOLARSHIP is a bequest left to the Southern Baptist Convention by Mrs. Ida Reed Opdyke of Jamestown, New York, as a memorial to her daughter, Dorothea Van Deusen Opdyke, and is to be used for the education of mountain people. Two scholarships are offered.
- THE DORIS SCHNEIDER AWARD IN TECHNICAL THEATRE is given to a theatre major for excellence in the area of technical theatre and in honor of Doris Schneider, a distinguished WCC alumna who currently teaches at a state university in North Carolina.
- THE CHAD SHEPHERD RESTRICTED SCHOLARSHIP was established in 2010 by Carl Shepherd to honor the memory of his son Chad Shepherd and to assist deserving students majoring in math.
- DARVIN K. SPROAT AND HEDWIG HOLSTEIN SPROAT RESTRICTED SCHOLARSHIP was established in 2011 by Patricia Sproat in honor of her husband, Douglas K. Sproat, a 1971 Carey graduate, and in memory of Darvin K. Sproat and Hedwig Holstein Sproat. Scholarships awards are made annually to a nontraditional student who is a single parent or guardian.
- THE MARY STEWART RESTRICTED SCHOLARSHIP was established in 2009 by friends of Dr. Stewart, former dean of the school of nursing, in honor of her commitment to advance the Joseph and Nancy Fail School of Nursing at William Carey University and nursing education in the state of Mississippi. A scholarship award will be made to a graduate nursing student pursuing a career in nursing education. The recipient will be selected by the graduate nursing faculty of the school of nursing.
- THE GORDON H. WHITE COMMUNITY LEADERSHIP SCHOLARSHIPS were established in memory of Gordon H. White by the board of trustees. Mr. White was a well-known civic leader and supporter of the university. These scholarships are intended to encourage students to emulate his example of service and leadership.
- THE ROBISON FAMILY RESTRICTED NURSING SCHOLARSHIP was established in 2013, this scholarship honors the long commitment and service to Christian education by the Robison family. Awards are made to deserving students pursuing an undergraduate degree in nursing.
- THE WILLIAM CAREY UNIVERSITY CULTURAL SOCIETY ALUMNI CHAPTER RESTRICTED SCHOLARSHIP was established in 2016 to provide financial support for students with financial need attending William Carey University.
- THE ZACHARY K. and TRICHI L. MURPHY SCHOLARSHIP FOR FUTURE SCIENCE AND MATH EDUCATORS RESTRICTED SCHOLARSHIP was established in 2016 to award a deserving undergraduate student who plans to teach secondary Science or Math.
- THE MARTHA ELIZABETH WHICHARD ENDOWED CHAIR OF NURSING was established in 2016 and honors the legacy of Martha Elizabeth Whichard. It supports nursing education within a Christian context. Interest and earnings from the fund shall be used for supporting the salary of a full-time chair in the William Carey University School of Nursing at the Tradition Campus.
- THE MATH RESEARCH RESTRICTED SCHOLARSHIP supports deserving students demonstrating research potential in pure and/or applied mathematics.
- THE JENNA BARTON RESTRICTED NURSING SCHOLARSHIP was established by Daniel Barton and sons in honor of his wife and their mother, Dr. Jenna Barton, who exemplifies the creed to “work earnestly, speak kindly, act sincerely, to be womanly
always and to be discouraged never.” This scholarship is intended to support PhD students who, like Dr. Barton, have been called to the nursing profession, exhibit compassion and commit to excellence in teaching nurses, nurse educators, and leaders in the
field. This scholarship is awarded per academic year to a deserving student(s) at William Carey University. Donations from the fund shall be used to support a PhD Nursing student. - THE JOSHUA CALEB PITTS LEGACY RESTRICTED SCHOLARSHIP was established in 2019 by Rachel Pitts to honor her nephew’s hard work and dedication towards his education.
- THE BYRD SISTERS FUND FOR STUDENT MISSIONS was established in 2005 by the Byrd family to honor five sisters with a passion for foreign missions and who are alumnae of Mississippi Woman’s College: Melissa Corinne Byrd ’22, Juanita Caroline Byrd Huang ’24, Annie Ward Byrd ’27, Mary Hasseltine Byrd Ball ’30, and Leona Valois Byrd ’40. Awards are granted to deserving students for the purpose of serving in missions during their study at William Carey University. Preference is given to students with an interest in serving in China.
- THE STEVE FORD MEMORIAL FLORIDA ACTEENS SCHOLARSHIP was established by Allison Chestnut of Hattiesburg to honor Patricia and Al Ford of Pensacola, Fla., who have been instrumental in the lives of Florida Acteens. Steve, their son, was killed in a construction accident.
- THE INTERNATIONAL MISSIONS SCHOLARSHIP was established by an anonymous Southern Baptist missionary to support mission volunteer students.

- THE KATHY WEBB RANDOLPH STUDENT MISSIONS ENDOWMENT was established in 2005 by the Hon. Mike and Kathy Randolph in her honor and in support of Christian missions. Awards are granted to deserving students for the purpose of serving in short-term missions during their study at William Carey University.
- THE GILLESPIE MISSION FUND was established by Dr. Robert and Mrs. Margaret Gillespie to bring the Christian religion, Christian values, and Christian principles to the countries of the world. The fund is owned by The Foundation of the First Baptist Church of Hattiesburg and is administered through the Mississippi Baptist Foundation for the support of the student mission endeavors of William Carey University.
NOTE: All university-based scholarships are housed by a selection committee that accepts student applications and determines eligibility of the awards.
