Healthcare Administration & Education
The Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in Healthcare Administration and Education at Williams Carey University is a terminal degree designed to prepare healthcare professionals for careers as educators, administrators, and researchers. The program equips graduates to teach undergraduate and graduate health profession students, advance into administrative roles within healthcare-related educational programs, and assume leadership and upper-level management positions in healthcare organizations.

This program can be completed in a two- or three-year plan of study.
Delivery Method
This program utilizes an online delivery format. Coursework is completed online with two required on-campus intensives at the Hattiesburg, MS campus.
Applicant Prerequisites & Requirements
To be admitted as a regular student, the applicant will:
- Submit a completed application to the William Carey University graduate school.
- Submit official transcripts from all colleges and universities attended
- Submit a 1–2-page scholarly narrative on a personal philosophy of healthcare education and goals
- Submit a current curriculum vitae
- Submit three recommendations: two individuals who can attest to research and scholarship ability and one personal reference. The reference form will be emailed to the references entered into the online application.
- Submit a completed criminal background history attestation. The required criminal background check will be completed at orientation and must result in a clear record of specific violations.
- Have earned a master’s degree in a health-related field from an accredited college or university.
- Have earned a GPA of ≥ 3.0 on all master level courses.
- Be eligible to re-enter any previously attended college or university in good standing. If previously enrolled in a PhD program, the applicant must provide a letter of good standing from that program.
- If professionally licensed, registered, or certified in a healthcare field, the student must provide a current unencumbered license, registry, or certification, with no pending legal or state board action. Unencumbered licensure must be maintained throughout enrollment in the program.
- Demonstrate computer literacy involving proficiency in word processing, email correspondence, and the internet.
- Demonstrate competency in scholarly writing prior to taking courses within the program through one of the following options:
- Submission of a GRE Analytical Writing Score of ≥ 3.5 within the last five years, or
- Passing HAE 799 - Academic Writing for Doctoral Students with a grade of B or better
- Demonstrate basic competency in statistics as evidenced by one of the following options:
- A grade of A or B in an undergraduate or graduate-level statistics course within the past 10 years, or
- Substantial experience in healthcare research projects prior to taking HAE 7XXX-Advanced Research and HAE 8000-Statistics.
- Demonstrate basic competency in teaching, learning, and student evaluation based on meeting one of the criteria prior to taking courses within the program:
- Masters in healthcare education and/or healthcare administration,
- Experience in healthcare education and/or healthcare administration,
- Teaching/learning/evaluation healthcare education graduate-level courses, or
- HAE 7060-Teaching Strategies and Evaluation of Student Learning (no practicum).
