Elementary Education

Hours

All elementary education majors are required to complete the teacher education liberal arts core (44 hours); additional university requirements (11-12 hours); an interdisciplinary concentration (21 hours); specialty/clinical courses (33 hours); and professional education courses (12 hours). In addition, two endorsements must be completed. An endorsement (except for Math) consists of 18 semester hours of academic content courses.

Delivery Method

The Elementary Education major is delivered in a traditional in-person format at the Hattiesburg and Tradition campuses, as well as virtual and hybrid formats. Students are expected to participate in field experience 1 day per week Junior year; 2 day, 3 days, then 5 days per week Senior year.

All Elementary Education majors are required to complete the teacher education core (K-6) along with an interdisciplinary endorsement, and two additional endorsements. Available endorsements include Pre-K, Special Education (k-12), Math (k-8), English (k-12), Biology Education, STEM, Science, Reading, and Social Studies. Completion of the program does not lead to automatic teacher licensure, but does adequately prepare students for the MS teacher licensure process.

Career Outlooks

Graduates of this program will be eligible to apply for a Mississippi teaching license which will enable them to work as Elementary Educators in k-6 classrooms.
