The mission of the School of Education is to develop caring, reflective decision makers in a Christian environment. The School of Education places great value on the Dispositions for Teaching Excellence, values outstanding teaching, and is dedicated to offering socially responsible, theoretically-informed, and research-based effective practice. We seek to encourage our teacher candidates to become life-long learners; we provide comprehensive instructional programs; and provide service to both public and private schools, as well as the professional community. The School of Education prepares professionals who contribute substantially to the educational process and improvement of the lives of students in our changing, technologically complex, and increasingly diverse society.


The School of Education at William Carey University is accredited by the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education/Council for the Accreditation of Education Preparation (NCATE/CAEP www.caepnet.org). This accreditation covers initial teacher preparation programs at Hattiesburg and Biloxi.

Meet the Dean

Dr. Teresa Poole

Teresa A. Poole, Dean, began her tenure with William Carey in 2018. Prior to this position, she served Mississippi K-12 students as a science teacher, high school assistant principal, elementary principal, director of curriculum, and Associate Superintendent in three Mississippi public school districts for over 25 years. During her tenure as a principal, she was named the Alternate Mississippi Administrator of the Year. Most recently, she completed coaching certification for the National Institute for School Leadership and completed the Mississippi School Boards Association Prospective Leadership Academy. She is married to Dr. Curtis Poole and they have two sons, Curtis Jr. and Christopher. She enjoys reading, attending her sons’ sporting events, working with the youth at her church, and trying out new recipes.
