The School of Education offers K-12 supplemental endorsements in gifted education, mild/moderate disabilities, reading education, and health education. A supplementary endorsement may be earned by completing the prescribed coursework. These programs have been approved for licensure by the Mississippi Department of Education.

This add-on endorsement will prepare teachers to conduct functional behavioral assessments and develop behavioral intervention plans, as well as implement, monitor and instruct children and youth with significant emotional and/or behavioral disorders in educational settings and residential facilities.


Hours

This program is 12 hours or four classes. The program begins in the fall and winter terms due to internship requirements.

The K-6 Supplemental Endorsement in Elementary Education is available for educators with an existing 5-year standard renewable license and three years teaching experience. After completion of the 15 hours of courses, educators must pass the Foundations of Reading Test (190).

The objective of the Add-on Endorsement in Mild/Moderate Disabilities K-12 is to prepare students to effectively and compassionately work with children and youth in elementary and high school through a comprehensive array of special education courses. These courses are highly recommended for teachers working with students with disabilities such as learning disabilities, developmentally delayed, visual impairments, hearing impairments, autism, mild intellectual disability, traumatic brain injury, and other health impairments. Courses are pertinent to both special education teachers and general education teachers that work with students with special needs. Prospective graduates have the opportunity, through this degree, to master specialized teaching techniques and become more marketable in future educational endeavors.

The Pre-K endorsement online course series is designed to equip licensed elementary teachers and teacher assistants with knowledge and skills necessary to address the distinct learning needs of early childhood students. This course series will provide teachers with research-based strategies to support these students in the general curriculum setting.

Teachers who hold a professional elementary teaching license in Mississippi (K-6) and complete the online course series will be eligible to add the Pre-K endorsement to their license which enables them to teach in a public four-year old classroom. Teachers who have completed Early LIt I, Early Childhood Development, and Survey of the Exceptional Child, will only be required to take ECE 430 (Assessing Young Children).

Teacher Assistants working in public schools in Mississippi needing to be certified may also complete the four course online series to receive certification through MDE. TA’s showing proof of employment in public Pre-K classroom can apply for a 50% tuition waiver through WCU.

The STEM endorsement will prepare prospective and practicing teachers to integrate and incorporate science, technology, engineering, and mathematics into K-12 classrooms. The program was developed in response to calls at the national and local levels to recruit, educate and support STEM education. The STEM Education Certification program is for any teacher wanting to develop a STEM background.


Hours

This add-on endorsement is 12 hours over two terms.

Delivery Method

The four STEM courses build in difficulty over two terms. Students will take one class for five weeks and then a second class during the remaining five weeks of the term for a total of six hours. The Special Education Administration Certificate consists of three courses (9 hours) to prepare current and future administrators with the skill set to address the educational needs and real-world challenges of students with disabilities. With this certificate, professionals ar prepared to pursue administrative positions with active roles in decision-making to help facilitate positive outcomes for students with special needs in their schools, districts, intermediate units, or other related areas.


Hours

This certificate is nine hours with students taking 2 courses in the first term and 1 course in the second term. The course material complements each other and can be completed in 2 terms.  The certificate courses are offered in 2 separate cohorts, summer & fall, and fall & winter.
