Faculty Insights

A Day in the life of a Pharmacy Student

WCU School of Pharmacy facilities

Our Doctor of Pharmacy program develops emerging leaders in our community who can make a difference while providing a dedicated service with compassion. As a part of our curriculum, we have developed an experiential learning portion where students are able to focus on managing medication use systems, promote health and wellness, learn about population-based care or patient-centered care and take what they have learned and apply it in a clinical setting. It is important for our students to be able to apply their classroom knowledge to clinical practice where they can gain the skills and confidence needed in pharmacy today. That is why experiential learning is a critical part of our curriculum.

Experiential Course Information

The experiential curriculum is divided into two parts:

  • Introductory to Pharmacy Practice Information (IPPE)
  • Advanced Pharmacy Practice Information (APPE)
The courses in each of these sections gradually escalates a student’s exposure to pharmacy practice. During these courses, students are placed within one of our qualified preceptor sites where they can be under the supervision of a licensed preceptor in a professional setting and be able to collaborate with others in the pharmacy and health care industry.

Preceptor Sites

To support our Doctor of Pharmacy curriculum, we have established dedicated preceptor sites, with affiliated companies and organizations, which enable our students to play an active role in and apply their classroom knowledge to real world situations. Our School of Pharmacy has set up a vast network of affiliated practice sites for student placement. Our experiential learning faculty and staff are dedicated in making the students experience a rewarding one.

Becoming a Preceptor

Becoming a qualified preceptor site allows businesses and organizations to aid in the clinical development skills of our students. It opens doors to providing practical experience and expansive knowledge while allowing facilities to utilize this opportunity for community advancement.

If your pharmacy is interested in becoming a preceptor site for our students:
