Degree Requirements

Biology Major: A minimum of 40 hours(at least 20 upper-level) is required of BIO/HRP courses. A minor in either chemistry or mathematics is strongly recommended; however, a chemistry minor is required for students in the preprofessional track (see below). All biology majors must take the following biological sciences core curriculum: BIO 498; a minimum of 12 hours of chemistry to include CHE 111-112 and 211; a minimum of six hours of mathematics to include MAT 131 or any two courses higher than MAT 131; and PSY 351.

Study Track Options

Students may choose one of the following tracks to ensure the completion of relevant or necessary courses for certain careers in biology:
Pre-professional Track (pre-medicine, pre-dentistry, pre-graduate, pre-physical therapy, pre-occupational therapy, pre-veterinary medicine, pre-optometry): The following courses are required in addition to the biological sciences core: CHE 212 and 405, PHY 101-102, and MAT 132. To complete the biology major, preprofessional students will select a minimum of 37 hours, including at least 17 upper level, of BIO/HRP courses(with the exception of BIO 101 and 220). The following courses are highly recommended: BIO 234-235 (or 244-245, and 275), 306, 310, 312, 326, 144 407, 409, 415, 419, 420, 470, HRP 201. Students will be advised as to other requirements for a particular professional school.
Microbiology Track: Students following this track will be eligible to sit for the National Registry of Microbiologists exam as a conditional registrant(i.e. no work experience). Exams are offered in the areas of clinical and public health microbiology, or consumer products and quality assurance microbiology. In addition to the biological sciences core, the student must select at least 20 hours from the following courses: BIO 260, 310, 415, 416, 419, 420, and 470. To complete the biology major, the following courses are highly recommended: BIO 306, 320, and HRP 201.
Environmental Biology Track: The following courses are required in addition to the biological sciences core: BIO 250, 320, and 430. To complete the biology major, the student will select a minimum of 13 hours chosen from relevant biology courses; BIO 301, 431, and 432 are highly recommended. Students may also wish to use summer courses at the Gulf Coast Research Laboratory to complete the hours in the major.

Biology Minor: Students must take a minimum of 18 semester hours of BIO/HRP courses. At least six hours must be upper level (300/400).

HIS 101-102 or HIS 201-202 (Two courses in one area) * (6 hours)
Psychology, Sociology, Economics, Political Science, or Religion (3 hours)
Science (BIO, CHE, or PHY) ** (3-4 hours)
MAT 131 (College Algebra or higher math course) (3 hours)
Art, Music, or Theatre Appreciation; Music History or Literature; Musical Theatre; or Theatre History *** (3 hours)
Public Speaking, Interpersonal Communication, or Oral Interpretation of Literature (3 hours)
Physical Education **** (1-2 hours)
University Core Total (37-39 hours)

Notes

* BA students must take HIS 1010-1020.
** BS students must take a 4-hour lab science course. Students in other degree programs may choose either a 3-hour, non-lab course or a 4-hour lab course to meet the requirement. B.A. students seeking teacher certification must also take a 4-hour lab science course.
*** Students majoring in one of the fine arts must take a course in one of the other two areas.
**** Activity courses (1-2 hours) or Health and Exercise for a New Lifestyle (3 hours); minimum for BSN, 1 hour; all other degrees, 2 hours; Health and Exercise for a New Lifestyle (3 hours); military science, varsity sports, marching band, and cheerleading may be used to satisfy this requirement.

Bachelor of Science Additional Requirements

B.S. degrees require 3 hours of English literature and 12-14 hours of natural/physical science, mathematics, or computing.
