The General Studies undergraduate program at our university offers a comprehensive and flexible pathway for students interested in forging a career within the educational sector, but who may seek alternative routes to traditional teacher licensure. Designed to cater to a diverse range of educational interests and career aspirations, this program is structured around a core General Studies degree complemented by the choice of four distinct concentrations. These concentrations enable students to tailor their education towards specialized fields within the broader educational landscape, equipping them with the knowledge, skills, and qualifications needed to excel in their chosen career path.

Program Overview

Available Concentrations

This concentration is designed to prepare students to work with children with autism and related developmental disabilities and provide behavioral therapy techniques to ensure their success both in and out of the classroom. The program provides highly specialized coursework in the field of Applied Behavioral Analysis and qualifies students to pursue careers as Board Certified Behavior Analysts once post-baccalaureate requirements on the Behavior Analyst Certification Board are met, including supervised clinical hours.

This concentration is designed for students who are seeking a Bachelor of General Studies degree but are not seeking licensure. Non-licensure educational studies courses will not substitute for courses within the Teacher Education program of study and will not lead to any kind of teaching licensure. Upon completion of this program, students will qualify to pursue a career as an educator in either Elementary Education (grades 4-6), Secondary Education (specific discipline grades 7-12), or Special Education (mild/moderate disabilities k-12) through participation in an accredited Alternate Route program.

This concentration prepares students to pursue careers in fields related to teaching physical education and health in school systems through an accredited Alternate Route program, as recreational leaders in nursing homes and other similar facilities, and counselors/instructors in employment where fitness and health are of primary importance. Students can earn this degree by completing 36 hours in this concentration alone or by completing 18 hours in this concentration along with an additional 18 hour concentration, provided that university core and elective hours have been met.

This program prepares students to pursue careers working with children who possess a wide range of exceptional learning needs due to learning, intellectual and/or developmental disabilities. The program prepares students for MS teaching licensure through participation in an accredited Alternate Route program. Non-MS students must refer to their state’s requirements for obtaining teaching licensure.

Hours

Completion of this program requires 128 total hours, including two concentrations of 18 hours each from the list above, in addition to the required university core and electives for undergraduate degrees. Career technical hours from community college may be used in place of electives where applicable.
