The WCU Dyslexia Therapy Program trains educators in a comprehensive, Orton-Gillingham-based Structured Literacy Approach to support students with dyslexia. Graduates qualify for state licensure as Dyslexia Therapists through the MS Department of Education and can pursue national certification through the Alliance Exam (CALT) and the International Dyslexia Association’s Exam (CERI). Accredited by the IDA and IMSLEC, this program equips educators with proven strategies to make a lasting impact on literacy and learning.

Program Overview


Hours

This program is 30 hours and may be completed in two years or 24 months. The program begins only in the Summer term.


Delivery Method

This program is offered in a convenient hybrid format, perfect for working students. Classes are held face to face for two weeks over two summers and on one Saturday per term. Therapists in training are supervised as they gain experience while working with struggling readers over the two-year training period. Students will work with struggling readers to acquire 720 clinical hours of dyslexia therapy. All online courses are offered via Canvas.


Applicant Prerequisites & Requirements

Prospective students must:

1. Complete an online application through Graduate Admissions
2. Submit all official transcripts electronically to Graduate Admissions
3. Have a GPA > 2.50 for the last 64 hours of undergraduate work or a cumulative GPA > 2.50
4. Hold a baccalaureate degree from an accredited college or university
5. Hold or qualify to hold a Class A teacher’s license and provide a copy
6. Provide two recommendations from past or current supervisors

NOTE: Non-education candidates must sign a waiver of a teacher’s license prior to beginning coursework.
