Carey Scholars attend Honors Colloquium
William Carey University hosted its first Honors Colloquium of the 2021-22 academic year Sept. 17 in the King Student Center. Guest speaker Rebekah Staples, founder and president of the consulting firm Free State Strategies, presented a lecture on Constitution Day.
“We were excited to have our first face-to-face colloquium meeting for Carey Scholars since spring 2020, when COVID-19 safety concerns changed how people could interact,” said Dr. David Lowery, associate professor of English and coordinator of the Carey Scholar program.
“Rebekah Staples did an excellent presentation on the history of both our U.S. Constitution and the Mississippi Constitution. With her experience working in state government and legislative policy, she was able to offer a first-person account of how the Constitution is an active, living document that closely affects us – and she engaged with students about current policies and legislation.”
More than 120 Carey Scholars are enrolled in the Honors Colloquium series. The Carey Scholars program serves academically advanced students, who receive scholarships and assist departments all over campus.
